Whether or not you celebrate Christmas, Christmas movies are everywhere during the holiday season. These Christmas movies are the perfect way to spread some holiday cheer. In no particular order, here are my top five favourite Christmas movies you should watch this season

5. Elf

Elf follows the story of a North Pole Elf named Buddy (Will Ferrell), who isn’t really an elf, but is a human. Once he discovers his true identity, he sets off to New York to find his real father, Walter Hobbs (James Caan) but nothing works out as planned. After he meets a girl, finds a family who doesn’t want him, and Santa needs his help, this misfit elf finds his place.  I can honestly say that I haven’t gone one Christmas season without watching this movie multiple times. It is a classic that is constantly playing on every channel. Will Ferrell plays an Elf that will keep you laughing, and the movie has many heartfelt moments that tie in perfectly with the holiday season.

4. Home Alone

What’s the number one thing you don’t want at Christmas? Being left behind. Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) has been left home alone while his entire family has gone on vacation for the holidays. At first he is excited to have no parents, but when two burglars, Harry and Marv (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern), are trying to break in, Kevin constructs an elaborate series of traps to protect his home. This movie makes me laugh every time I watch it. All of Kevin’s pranks, though unrealistic, are great, and this movie is a joy to watch each and every time.

3. How The Grinch Stole Christmas

The Grinch (Jim Carrey), is a Christmas-hating grouch who lives on the outskirts of Whoville. As Christmas approaches, he decides he might get into the spirit. But when that goes south, the Grinch decides that if he can’t have Christmas, none of the Whos can either. He makes a plan to steal Christmas, but one Who may be able to change his mind. The Grinch is a funny character that is always changing his outlook on things throughout the movie. He is sarcastic and somehow extremely relatable despite all of his wallowing in the movie. However, this movie also teaches a lesson about how love itself can change people, and that Christmas isn’t about the presents, but about the people that you share it with.

2. A Christmas Story

Ralphie, a 9 year old boy living in the 1940’s is trying to convince his parents, Santa, and the world that the best Christmas gift that he could receive would be the Red Ryder BB rifle. He goes to great lengths to get the gun, and gets some other interesting gifts along the way, but he always gets the same answer, “You’ll shoot your eye out kid.” But someone might still get him what he wants. This movie does really show what life during Christmas really is like. From the embarrassing Christmas presents, to being bundled up in a snowsuit by your mom, to the mall Santa Claus, this movie has it all. It is funny, happy, sweet, and does the perfect job of getting you into the Christmas spirit.

1. Love Actually

Love Actually follows the story of eight different couples as they try to figure out Christmas, their love stories, and their lives. Though they are different people, each person is connected in one way or another. It shows how love can make people do crazy things and how Christmas really is the most wonderful time of the year. If I had to pick a favourite Christmas movie, I think this would be it. I am a personal fan of romance movies and this is one of the best. There are so many different people who have different stories, yet they all fit like pieces of a puzzle. They all also have one common characteristic about them: they love someone, whether it be family, friends, or a partner. That is what is unique about this movie, the love isn’t just about romance.

There you have it. Five of my favourite Christmas movies. Now you have something to do instead of studying for evaluations. Happy holidays BSS!
